As parents, you've probably used the phrase "Stranger Danger” to describe to your kids those people to avoid. However, there are some shortcomings to focusing solely on the potential threat posed by people your child doesn't know.

First of all, some kids will heed this warning from their parents, but others could still be convinced to go with a stranger if they were offered candy or asked to assist in looking for a lost dog. In today’s world, strangers can even attempt to contact your child in real life and or through online channels.

Second, there's always a possibility your child may become separated from you and have no choice but to interact with a "stranger" in order to find help in getting back to safety.

So what's concerned parent to do?

Raising Awareness

Although this a sensitive topic, the best defense against child sexual predators is starting conversations early so that your children have the knowledge they need to identify what is or is not appropriate. Not only will they be more likely to recognize or even avoid a bad situation, but you'll have the reassurance of knowing that they're getting the correct information from you rather than from someone else who may or may not be reliable.

Depending on your child’s age, the conversation may not be as in depth as it might be with a teenager, but here are some examples of what to say in different scenarios. If a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood:

1. Tell your child that someone who has done something harmful to kids has moved into your area.
2. Because of this, your child can only venture out into their neighborhood either with a group of friends or under adult supervision –– never alone.
3. If they ask about details of what the offender did, simply say they did something inappropriate to hurt a child.
4. Remember to remind your child that most people in this world do care about kids, but there are also those that do have harmful intentions towards kids.
5. Make sure your child is aware of the address of the house to avoid. If there is a photo of the individual available, share that with your child as well so they can recognize the offender.
6. Be open to any questions they have and let them know they can come to you to talk about this matter at any time.
7. Some young children may not comprehend the subject matter or understand its importance. Tell them to take the situation seriously, and reassure them that you are trying to protect them, not just scare them

Understanding "Bad Strangers"

Should your child ever become separated from you away from home and have no other option than to ask an adult for help, make sure they can identify someone who is less likely to present a danger to them, even if they don't know the individual personally.

1. While there are some strangers who hurt kids, explain to your child that these strangers will usually try to get kids far away from any other people before they do anything harmful.
2. If your children are ever in a situation where they need to ask for help from people they don't know, there are ways that they can recognize who is less likely to be a "bad stranger".
3. Teach them to look for moms with kids, uninformed police officers, security guards, or other low-risk adults who they can ask for emergency assistance.
4. Help them memorize important information like your full name, home address, and telephone number so that they or a trustworthy adult can get contact you quickly.

"Stranger Danger" Online

Many kids, even very young ones, already own a cell phone. This makes them easily accessible to strangers anywhere. Whether your child plays online games, talks to other players in chat rooms, engages on social media, or sends texts to “friends”, they could be chatting with or being contacted by a child predator.

1. The first thing you need to remind your kid is that everything posted on the internet (and even messages sent through their phone) could fall into the wrong hands and be used against them.
2. Teach them to respect their bodies, and not to share any compromising photos of themselves or other kids. Remind them to not share any personal information online with those they do not know in real life.
3. If they get a text or message online from a “stranger” or new “friend” that makes them feel uncomfortable or scared, they should immediately come to you so that you can take action.
4. Conduct some “what-if” scenarios to help your child identify warning signs so that you can work together to prevent them from being lured into a bad situation.

Having these conversations does not make you overprotective or a “helicopter parent”. It doesn’t even mean you don’t trust your kid. Having these conversations could prevent the unthinkable by giving your children the tools they need to protect themselves.

In today’s technology driven world, kids use social media sites, chat rooms, and texting as their primary communication tools. Online predators know this and are constantly roaming these online spaces for their next victims. 

There are an estimated 500,000 online predators active each day. Children between 12 and 15 are especially susceptible to being groomed by online predators. In cases where children have been physically harmed by predators they met online, 100% of them reported that they went to meet the offender voluntarily. Additionally, recent studies reveal that 15-20% of teens surveyed say they have considered arranging an in-person meeting with someone they have only talked to online. 

According to the FBI, an estimated 89% of sexual advances directed at kids occur in Internet chat rooms or through instant messaging. While the end goal for some of these online predators may be an in-person meeting, others may aim to engage in sextortion schemes that target kids by instructing them to send sexually explicit photos of themselves and using those photos as blackmail. 

While some predators use fake profile pictures and fake ages to pose as peers, many never attempt to hide the fact that they are adults because teens often feel validated by the idea of having an older “friend” who appears attentive and supportive. Online predators may use shared hobbies or interests (real or fake) to establish an online relationship with the victim. Interaction then progresses to gaining the child’s trust by complimenting them, listening sympathetically, and engaging in increasingly personal conversation. Over time, these exchanges evolve into sexual conversations, and can eventually result in kids sending inappropriate photos or agreeing to meet in person..

This process is one that occurs more often than most parents want to believe. Here are five warning signs that may indicate that your child is being groomed by an online predator: 

1. Your child begins to spend an increased (even excessive) amount of time online. 
2. Your child becomes very secretive about online activities and won’t allow you to see their screen or view their social media accounts. They may become possessive of phones or personal devices, or quickly switch tabs or screens whenever they realize you are close by..
3. Your child begins using mature or sexually explicit language that you would not otherwise expect them to know. 
4. Your child becomes unusually withdrawn or emotionally volatile.
5. You find sexually explicit photos or pornography on devices or computers that your child uses. 

The first and most important step in addressing any of these red flags is to talk to your child about the changes in their behavior and your concerns about the stress they appear to be experiencing. If you determine that your child may be the victim of a sextortion scheme, there are a number of resources that can help you respond and report the issue.

Whether your child has already encountered an online predator or not, there are also steps you can take to mitigate the risk. Install parental controls on all devices that your child can access,  and have a candid and serious conversation with your child about your rules and expectations for their online behavior.

• ‍Behavioral Changes: Keep an eye out for sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, aggression, or fearfulness. Younger children may also exhibit regressive behaviors like bed-wetting or thumb-sucking.
• ‍Physical Signs: While not always present, physical signs such as unexplained bruises, injuries to genital areas, or difficulty walking or sitting can indicate possible abuse.
• ‍Emotional Distress: Children who have been sexually abused may experience a range of emotional reactions, including depression, anxiety, nightmares, or sudden mood swings.
• ‍Sexual Knowledge or Behavior Beyond Their Age: If a child demonstrates knowledge of sexual acts or engages in sexual behaviors that are developmentally inappropriate, it could be a red flag.
• ‍Avoidance of Certain People or Places: Pay attention if a child consistently avoids being alone with a particular person or refuses to go to certain places without providing a clear reason.

If you suspect that a child close to you may be experiencing sexual abuse, it's essential to take action promptly and appropriately.

• ‍Stay Calm and Reassuring: Approach the child with empathy and reassurance. Let them know they are safe and that you believe them.
• ‍Listen and Validate: Allow the child to share their feelings and experiences at their own pace. Listen without judgment and validate their emotions.
• ‍Report Suspicions: If you have reasonable suspicion or evidence of abuse, report it immediately to the appropriate authorities, such as Child Protective Services or law enforcement.
• ‍Provide Support: Offer ongoing support to the child by connecting them with a trusted therapist, counselor, or support group specializing in child sexual abuse.
• ‍Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about child sexual abuse, its impact, and how to prevent it. Knowledge is power in safeguarding our children.

Above all, remember that addressing child sexual abuse requires sensitivity, compassion, and a commitment to protecting the well-being of our most vulnerable members of society. By breaking the silence and raising awareness, we can create a safer environment where children can thrive free from the shadow of abuse.

For parents, this annual phenomenon represents a perfect opportunity to lay the groundwork for an open and ongoing conversation with our kids about the potential dangers of online sexual predators.  

Talk to Your Kids About Using Tech Safely

Parents naturally wish that there was no need to address this topic, but unfortunately, ignoring the problem will never make it go away––it will only leave your child vulnerable. Sexual predators are relentless and will use any means at their disposal to find their next victim, including online grooming, sextortion, and luring kids to real-life meetings. A typical online predator is in the process of grooming 10 or more victims at a time.

Considering the fact that in 2024 even very young children spend increasing amounts of time online or on connected devices, it’s more crucial than ever to ensure children aren’t at undue risk of being exploited by these dangerous individuals. 

Here are some important points to cover with your children when you talk to them about how online predators operate:

• Remind your children that everything posted on the Internet or sent through their phone could end up in the wrong hands and may be used against them. 
• Teach them to respect their bodies and stress that they should never share any compromising photos of themselves or other kids.  
• Remind them not to share any personal information with people they do not know well in real life. 
• If they get a text or message online from a “stranger” or new “friend” that makes them feel uncomfortable or scared, they should let you know immediately so that you can take action. 

What Is Sextortion?

According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), law enforcement received over 7,000 reports related to the online sextortion of minors in 2022, resulting in at least 3,000 victims (primarily boys) and more than a dozen deaths by suicide.  Keep in mind that these numbers only represent the individuals who came forward to report incidents of sextortion. A significant number of victims are too scared or embarrassed to tell anyone what happened to them. 

How Does Sextortion Happen?

Predators create fake accounts on social media platforms, chat rooms, and online games to begin a conversation with children and identify which of them are particularly lonely, hungry for attention, or otherwise susceptible to manipulation. Once a child engages, the predator will seek to gain their trust and eventually persuade them to send inappropriate photos or videos. The predator will threaten to share these images with a child’s friends and family if they don’t take further action, such as sending money or additional, more inappropriate materials. This is sextortion.

What Can I Do to Stop Sextortion?

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has outlined several important action items for young people who have been victimized by sextortion.

• Remember, you are not to blame––the predator is.
• Before deciding whether to pay money or otherwise comply with the predator, ask for help. This can be a very complex problem that requires guidance from trusted adults or law enforcement agents.  
• Be aware that cooperating with or paying these predators rarely stops the blackmail and harassment.
• REPORT the predator’s account via the associated platform’s safety feature.
• BLOCK the predator and DO NOT DELETE the profile or messages. These pieces of evidence can provide critical assistance to law enforcement in identifying the responsible parties and preventing them from causing further harm.
• If you feel like you don’t have an adult in your corner, reach out to NCMEC for support by calling 1-800-THE-LOST, or email gethelp@ncmec.org. 

Parents or children can also take the following steps to address this issue:   

• Contact NCMEC to help remove any explicit images a predator has acquired from the Internet. 
• Visit cybertipline.org to report the incident to the FBI and request their help with that process.
• If children don’t feel they have adults in their corner, they can reach out to NCMEC for support at  gethelp@ncmec.org or call NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST. 

The bottom line is this: If young people are being exploited, they are victims of a crime and it must be reported. 

How Do I Report Sextortion?

• Call or email your local FBI field office. You can view this list of all FBI field offices and the areas they cover to find the contact information you need.
• If you’re not sure which field office to contact, call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
• Visit tips.fbi.gov to submit an online report.

What Else Can I Do to Prevent Sextortion?

In order to prevent kids from being exploited by predators, parents need to know who their children are talking to. Making the decision to buy your child a cell phone is not an easy one. As the holidays approach, there's a good chance that kids who don't already have their own phones will put one on their wish list.

But just because kids can ask for a phone, does that mean they're ready for one? To answer that question, parents should consider the following issues and make sure they're prepared for their child to have that level of responsibility.

1. Is a cell phone a want or a need? Most kids want a cell phone because they think it's a status symbol, or because their friends have one. However, neither of those points address the question of whether having their own phone is a necessity. Do they need to be able to contact you in case of emergencies? Do they need to be able to search the internet for information? Do they need to be able to communicate with friends or use certain apps? Do they spend most of their time with you or in the care of another adult you know and trust? If your kids aren't frequently in situations where they have to function independently or without reliable supervision, you may decide that a cell phone is more of a luxury than a day-to-day need.

‍Are they mature enough to handle the responsibility? Cell phones are expensive, powerful devices that must be protected and treated with respect at all times. Do your kids demonstrate the responsibility necessary to respect family rules and manage their behavior in other areas of their life? Do they take care of other items you have bought for them?

‍Do you have the right securities in place? Even the most responsible kids still need supervision when using a cell phone because it isn't just a helpful resource for finding information––it can also unintentionally create an avenue for exposure to things your kids may not be ready to see or provide predators greater access to their devices and information. As a parent, you also have an obligation to be aware of the popular apps and how they work, set up the appropriate privacy settings, stay on top of critical security news and updates, and download a safety app that can watch out for you and your family. Here are some ideas to encourage kids to step away from the blue screens and get active.Set Tech Ground RulesSet an allotted amount of screen time throughout the day and monitor your child’s phone or tablet to make sure they are not overdoing it. Make all mealtimes tech free. Set a certain time at night when technology should be shut down and charge all items in the living room, not their bedrooms.Encourage Physical ActivityPut the tech away and go play in the backyard, go for a hike, or have a nature scavenger hunt.Earn Tech TimeEstablish chores or outdoor activities that must be completed before screentime is awarded.Learning AppsDownload learning or family game apps you can do together. Summertime Safety Tips

Here are some safety reminders for kids playing outside.Stay hydrated: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when they are engaged in physical activities or spending time outdoors in the heat. Remind them to drink water even if they don't feel thirsty.Sun protection: Teach your child the importance of sun protection. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to their exposed skin 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours. Encourage them to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to protect against harmful UV rays.Play safely in water: Whether swimming in a pool, lake, or ocean, ensure your child is always supervised by an adult who knows how to swim. If your child is not a strong swimmer, consider using approved flotation devices. Teach them about water safety rules, such as not running near the pool and never swimming alone.Heat safety: Be cautious about outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Encourage your child to take breaks in shaded areas or indoors to cool down. You may have received a notice of a registered sex offender that moved close to where you live. Maybe you are concerned because your child walks to the bus stop past the home of a registered sex offender. Now how do you talk to your child about sex offenders?How do I Talk to My Kids About Sex Offenders?Grade-schoolers can begin to understand that a person who appears nice can have hurtful intentions.

• Tell your child that while most people care about children and would help them in any situation, some choose to hurt children.
• Stress to your child the importance of being cautious of people they do not know.
• Your child should not walk or ride bikes in the neighborhood without adult supervision, or if old enough, they should only do so in the company of two or more friends.
• Say that an individual who was in prison lives nearby.
• Use the notice to point the individual out to your child and tell them to stay away from that person.

Answering your Child’s QuestionsMany children will accept your directions for steering clear of the person. Others will have questions. You will need to explain further because if you do not, they will find someone else to ask. You want your child to get their information from you.Child: Why was that person in prison?Parent: They hurt a child.Child: What did they do?Parent: They touched the child inappropriately, in their private areas, which is a crime.Child: Why did they do that?Parent: Some things you will not understand until you are older, and this is one of them. I do not completely understand it myself.Further PrecautionsEven after your explanation and warning, you might need to see that an adult escorts your child and their friend's home from school and you may want to keep them from roaming the neighborhood on their bicycle. If approached by the individual in question, tell your child to get away quickly. They should let you know what happened when they get home or tell an adult nearby, or if they have a cell phone, they should call you.Here are some more basic safety skills:

• Teach your child to trust their feelings and say NO and run away from a situation that does not feel right.
• There are some strangers that can assist them if they need help – other parents with children, other children, police in uniform or store clerks.
• Teach your child to dial 911.

What if my child is contacted by a registered sex offender?Do not confront the individual. If the behavior of the individual seems inappropriate, contact your local law enforcement, and inform them of your suspicion. If your child received an email or text message, be sure to save it and take a screen shot of it. If you received an email or postcard notice about an offender, contact the local agency listed on the notice. Or call your local Sheriff’s Office. A frightening trend!

• An online perpetrator sent Ryan a romantic picture of a young female and asked for one of him in return. Immediately after Ryan shared an intimate photo of his own, the cybercriminal demanded $5,000, threatening to make the photo public and send it to Ryan’s family and friends. Hours later, police said, a panicked Ryan took his own life.
• Brian Montgomery lost his 16-year-old son after he took his own life when he was extorted with explicit imagery. His teen son reportedly received a message from an Instagram account, modeling an "attractive" young girl, that lured him into communication after claiming to be a mutual acquaintance.  Eventually, Walker opened a video chat with the perpetrators, who recorded him partaking in sexual activity. Shortly after, they pressed him for $1,000, his father said, using the imagery as leverage. 
• “The Monster knew exactly what to say and what to post to get into a 15-year-old's brain.” Once the hacker had a picture of Braden, Argiro-Markus said her son was threatened and told to pay the predator $1,800 or "else the monster" was going to release it among other pictures the hacker took from Braden's Instagram account. "The messages go on and on for 27 minutes," she wrote. "The last five minutes of B's life, he said over and over again, 'I am only 15, why are you doing this to me? I am only 15, you will ruin my life.' It is a thread that in a way I wish I never read, but here we are." At 11:28 a.m., Braden died by suicide.

Victims of Sextortion Committing Suicide

The FBI reports an explosive increase in teenage boys being targeted online and extorted for money through sextortion.Sextortion has gained popularity among predators because it is something that predators can do through any online site, app, gaming, messaging, or social media platform. Sometimes the predator will make first contact by sending a threat saying they already have a revealing photo or video and are going to share publicly if the teen doesn’t send additional photos. More often, it starts with a teen thinking they are communicating with someone their age, a peer, who is interested in forming a relationship.After they have gained the trust of their victim, the predator will ask for a sexual or risqué photo or video. Once they have received it, they will then threaten to publish it or share it with the teen’s family and friends if they don’t send money or additional photos.These predators know where to reach kids, which ones to target, and how to talk to them on their level. One person the FBI put in prison for this crime was a 40-year-old man who previously worked as a youth minister so he could learn how teens talked to one another.Unfortunately, many teens feel there is no way out of an embarrassing situation like this. The shame, confusion, and fear of this getting out will cause teens anxiety, depression, and in many cases, could lead to suicide.Here are a few suggestions for teens to prevent Sextortion or actions to take if it is happening to you:

• Be very selective about what you share online and especially be wary of strangers. Block or ignore messages from those you don’t know in real life.
• Any content you create online can be made public. Nothing actually “disappears”
• Be aware that people can pretend to be someone different online. Videos and photos on their profiles could be fake.
• Ask for help. If you are receiving messages or requests online that don’t seem right, go to an adult immediately. Screenshot any messages and then block the sender.
• If you are in a sextortion situation, reach out to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or report the crime online at tips.fbi.gov. Agents see these cases all the time and have helped thousands of young people. They want to stop the harassment, arrest the predator, and get young people the support they need.
• Remember – you are NOT the one in trouble and you are NOT alone. Although it may feel hopeless, there are professionals available to help you and your family. If you are thinking about suicide, are worried about your child, or friend, or would like emotional support, the Lifeline network is available 24/7 across the United States by dialing 988.

New Year, new resolutions, right?Healthy habits, exercising, and drinking more water may be on your list, but if you are a parent,one of those resolutions should be to keep your child safer by educating them on the dangers of predators.Talk to Your KidsIt’s unfortunate that this is a topic parents must address, but child predators never stop. From online grooming, sextortion, and eventually real-life meetings, these predators are constantly searching for their next victims. Most online predators are grooming over 10 victims at a time.

• Remind your child that everything posted on the internet and even messages sent through their phone, could get into the wrong hands, and used against them. 
• Teach them to respect their bodies and not share any compromising photos of themselves or other kids.  
• Remind them to not share any personal information with those they do not know in real life. 
• If they get a text or message online from a “stranger” or new “friend” that makes them feel uncomfortable or scared, they should immediately come to you so you can take action. 

SextortionAccording to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), over the past year, law enforcement received over 7,000 reports related to the online sextortion of minors, resulting in at least 3,000 victims, primarily boys, and more than a dozen suicides. And that is only the number of those that came forward to report it. A lot of victims are too scared or embarrassed to let anyone know.Using social media platforms, chat rooms, and online games, predators will create fake accounts and begin a conversation, learning which children are lonely, seeking attention, or most vulnerable. Once a child partakes in that conversation, the predator will earn their trust and eventually persuade them to send inappropriate photos or video.Child predators will then tell the child if they do not send money or do something more inappropriate, they will share it with their friends and family. This is sextortion.If Your Child is A Victim of SextortionThe National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has outlined steps parents and young people can take if they or their child are a victim of sextortion, including:

• Remember, the predator is to blame, not your child or you.
• Get help before deciding whether to pay money or otherwise comply with the predator.  
• Cooperating or paying rarely stops the blackmail and continued harassment.
• REPORT the predator’s account via the platform’s safety feature.
• BLOCK the predator and DO NOT DELETE the profile or messages because that can be helpful to law enforcement in identifying and stopping them.
• Let NCMEC help get explicit images of you off the internet.
• Visit cybertipline.org to report to the FBI for help with the process.
• Ask for help. This can be a very complex problem and may require help from adults or law enforcement.
• If children don’t feel they have adults in their corner, they can reach out to NCMEC for support at  gethelp@ncmec.org or call NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST.

Do you know whose door your kids are knocking on while trick-or-treating?

Every home may not be safe. There are more than 850,000 registered sex offenders in the United States[1], many convicted of crimes against minors.Before trick-or-treating this Halloween, sheriff’s offices and police departments advise parents to check their local sex offender registry. However, many parents may not know where to look or what information is most important on the registries. OffenderWatch, the nation’s largest network of local and state agencies managing sex offenders, shares its tips on reading and understanding sex offender registries.Safety tips for a safe Halloween:

1. Before you go trick-or-treating, use a sex offender registry published by law enforcement. Not all registries are created equal. Many third-party websites publish outdated sex offender data, claiming it is accurate. Parents and guardians should only trust data provided through local law enforcement. To find your registry, go to your local sheriff’s office or police department's website, state sex registry site, or visit https://www.nsopw.gov.
2. Search an address and use the map to find offenders in your area. While on your county or city’s sex offender registry, input your home address or the address where you’ll be trick-or-treating to view a map of offenders in that area. Print out the map with addresses to take with you.
3. Sign up for email notifications. While on your county or city’s sex offender page, sign up for email notifications so you will know if a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood.
4. Download the OffenderWatch App. NEW Release launching this month with new app features! Download the app on your phone and your child’s phone so you can locate registered sex offenders near you or your family, and be notified should a registered sex offender reach out to your child through call, text, or email. You can also locate your child’s phone while trick-or-treating. 5. Talk to your children. If sex offenders live in your neighborhood, point out their house to your children and explain the offender has a criminal record. Tell your children to let you know if the sex offender tries to talk to them or lure them inside.

As parents, you have probably used the phrase ‘Stranger Danger” to describe to your kids those people to avoid. However, some kids will heed the warning from their parents, and some would still go with a stranger if offered candy or to assist in looking for a stranger’s lost dog.In today’s world, it’s even scarier because “strangers” can now attempt to contact your kid in real life and online.Although it is a sensitive topic, the best defense for your kids against child sexual predators is to start the conversations early so they are educated and get the correct information from you, and not someone else.Depending on your kid’s age, the conversation may not be as in depth as it might be with a teenager, but here are some examples of what to say in different scenarios.If a registered sex offender moves into your neighborhood:

1. Tell your kid that someone who has done something harmful to kids has moved into your area.
2. Because of this, your kid can only venture out into their neighborhood either with a group of friends or under adult supervision, but never alone.
3. If they ask about details of what the offender did, simply say they did something inappropriate to hurt a child.
4. Remember to remind your kid that most people in this world do care about kids, but there are also those that do have harmful intentions towards kids.
5. Make sure your kid is aware of the address of the house to avoid, and if there is a photo of the individual, share that with them as well, so they can recognize the offender.
6. Be open to any questions they have and let them know they can come to you to talk about this matter at any time.
7. Some young kids may not comprehend the subject matter and think it’s a joke or not going to affect them. Tell them to take the situation seriously and reassure them that you are trying to protect them, not just scare them.

Many kids today, as young as 7, have a cell phone. This makes them easily accessible to strangers anywhere. Whether your kid plays online games, talks to other players in chat rooms, engages on social media, or sends texts to “friends”, they could be chatting with or contacted by a child predator.

 Now that the presents have been opened, and your kids have new electronic devices, here are a few tips to make sure they remain safe online with their new digital toys.Safety tips for electronic devices:

1. Know your kid’s passwords. These devices are a big responsibility that they aren’t ready to face alone. Parental supervision is necessary to guide them in their online activity.
2. Set boundaries. Maintain a good balance by setting limits on screen time. Set digital curfews when everyone in the home must disconnect from electronic devices.
3. Talk with your kids about possible negative experiences online. If your kids know ahead of time what signs to watch for when surfing the internet, playing on apps, or chatting online. If someone online makes them feel uncomfortable or is acting strange, let them know they can bring it to your attention so you can handle it together.

In today’s hi-tech world, it’s too easy for predators to find and contact potential victims. Children and teens love making friends and posting on social media. But do they really know their online “friends”?

According to the 2020 Human Trafficking Report distributed by the Human Trafficking Institute, the internet is a major platform for traffickers to recruit sex trafficking victims. In 2020, the majority of active sex trafficking cases involved the internet as the primary method of solicitation, with 59% of online victim recruitment in active sex trafficking cases occurring through Facebook.  

The report also states that 53% of victims in active human trafficking cases were children.  

A nonthreatening message, a compliment, or an innocent photo of a smile sent to a predator initiates the grooming process. They hide in online anonymity, entice, and build trust in the victim.  

The report found that human traffickers were most likely to control their victims using nonphysical methods of coercion, such as sextortion or threats of serious harm to them or a family member if they don’t perform a sexual act, fraud, or blackmail.  

This real threat of human trafficking by online predators requires us to teach kids about internet safety and using Facebook.    

A few simple rules for kids:

• DON’T talk to anyone online that you don’t know in real life.  
• DON’T reveal any personal information, your address, or your school. 
• DON’T send photos of yourself to strangers online, especially any that are sexual in nature. 
• DON’T agree to meet a stranger in person that you have met online.  
• DO talk to a parent or a trusted adult if you feel uncomfortable about someone online 

Safety guidelines for parents:

• If you allow your child to use Facebook or other social apps, review the privacy settings. 
• Know who your kid’s friends are online. 
• Encourage your kids to reach out to you and share if a stranger has tried to interact with them inappropriately online. 
• Review the apps that your kids use and stay aware of dangerous apps and popular lingo. 
• Talk your kids about “stranger danger” online as you would in real life situations.

School’s out for summer and that means more free time for kids to play outdoors and online. Just as you remind them to keep safe outside by applying sunscreen and drinking water to stay hydrated, you should also continue your conversation about online safety:1. Talk to your child about how to be safe online. Children are vulnerable and predators know this. It is important to be honest about online predators, sexting and cyberbullying. Do they know the person they are chatting with in real life? If they see something threatening or scary, will they share it with you immediately? You empower your child by teaching him/her how to handle uncomfortable online situations or contact by a stranger.2. Know what they are doing online.Monitor your child’s access to the Internet including email, chat rooms, instant messengers, and social media apps. Make sure parental controls are set and all devices have virus protection. You should know which social media platforms, games, and other websites they visit often. In a casual way, ask your child who their best friends are online, who they speak with often, and what apps they use (The 22 Dangerous Apps Parents Should Look For On Their Kids' Phones).3. Help your kids develop healthy online habits. Establish rules and screen time limits. Instruct them to never give out their name, address, telephone number, school name, or any other personal information. Never share a photo with a stranger or someone they don’t know in real life. Remind them once something is posted or sent, it can’t be taken back.4. Encourage outdoor activities.The internet has some great resources for fun and education, but summer is a time for them to go outside and enjoy some fresh air. During the week of April 17–24, OffenderWatch team members Mark Wilson, Business Development Manager, and Don Thanars, Territory Manager, completed four Kansas area training sessions conducted at law enforcement agencies in Rooks County, Lyon County, Sedgwick County, and Ford County.The well attended sessions included two representatives from the Kansas Bureau of Investigations whose overall responsibility is for the state sex offender registry, as well as 40 users representing 16 agencies from around the state. Also in attendance were several prospect agencies from surrounding areas.Wilson and Thanars achieved their objectives to provide refresher and more in-depth training on underutilized or unused areas of the OffenderWatch application, including TIPS and the Kansas transaction log.Additionally, they provided updates on OffenderWatch development efforts and add-on product offerings, including the new OffenderWatch app, a FREE Family Safety app offered to the public.The training sessions were very beneficial to all participants and a positive step towards enhancing relationships with existing customers, expanding OffenderWatch’s footprint in Kansas, and continuing to help partners use the industry’s leading network to its full potential to help prevent the unthinkable.

Over the past several months, OffenderWatch has been proud to recognize several individuals at different law enforcement agencies with a National Recognition for Excellence in managing sex offender registries for their departments. The National Certificate of Recognition is awarded to only a handful of people each year among the 16,000 registered users of the Offender Watch system.

Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Detective Louis Ramos of the Highlands County Sheriff Office’s Special Victims Unit in Florida was among the recent honorees. Ramos, who oversees the sex offenders and career offenders living in Highlands county, was honored for implementing "policies and procedures well above the ordinary minimum requirements set forth by state laws so as to ensure the law enforcement community and citizens are made aware of offender movements, status and risks.” Don Thanars, OffenderWatch territory manager who presented the award, said the entire Special Victims Unit team is to be commended for their work monitoring sex offenders in Highlands County. "It takes all the pieces working together to ensure compliance, and ultimately the citizens benefit. The community should be proud of its sex offender management team," he said. Ramos added that he learned how to do his job from Detective Cara Moseley, who held the position prior to him, and that she deserves as much credit for the award.

Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Robin Smith, OffenderWatch territory manager, recently visited Atlanta to meet the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Unit and to applaud members’ efforts. Smith presented the National Certificate of Recognition to Law Enforcement Division Commander Lieutenant Colonel Shawn Jones and the team. Fulton County’s previous sheriff, Sheriff Theodore “Ted” Jackson, said, “This critical Unit has continually worked behind the scenes to manage and coordinate all of the sex offender registrants in Fulton County while adhering to social distancing protocols and CDC guidelines for safety during the pandemic. Simultaneously, staff members’ attention to detail with registrant records and networking with detectives and other law enforcement jurisdictions is an excellent example of the quality of service our deputies and civilian staff give daily.” The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for more than 2,500 offenders throughout the county. The Sex Offender Unit is comprised of the following individuals: Mrs. A. Gaither, Mrs. J. Smith, Deputy L. Cummings, Deputy L. Williams, with assistance from Ms. Vickie Davis, and Sergeant A. Slocum. Since the start of the pandemic, the FCSO Sex Offender Unit registered more than 150 new offenders. The Unit provided services to 829 offenders and issued 118 warrants for those offenders not in compliance.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Office The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit in Alabama was also among the recipients. The MCSO Special Victims Unit consists of registry compliance coordinator Cindy Crowell, Sgt. Charles Radke and Investigator Caleb Brooks. The SVU team manages approximately 200 sex offenders and has a 99 percent compliance rate among offenders – meaning 1 percent of the offenders have a compliance issue during the year. Individuals who fall out of compliance are quickly followed up with by investigators and can face additional charges. In addition, the SVU team also works to ensure complete, accurate and comprehensive offender records; to track offenders moving in and out of the county; and to promote interagency cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Service investigating and locating runaway offenders.

North Las Vegas Police Department North Las Vegas Police Department Investigative Specialist Sonia Aispuro was also recognized as a national leader in her field for her outstanding public service and leadership administering the department's Offender Watch database. As an Investigative Specialist, one of Aispuro’s many duties includes managing the city’s sex offender records on Offender Watch. Aispuro diligently checks sex offender records to make sure they are up to date and verifies that offenders are compliant with the law, which helps keep their neighborhoods safe. This also allows the department to provide timely and accurate information about convicted sex offenders to the community. "It is truly an honor to be recognized by Watch Systems and I am very humbled to receive this award,” Aispuro said. "I know I would not have been considered if I didn't have the support of such an amazing team. I am very proud to be part of a Blue Family that is so dedicated to serving our community. This really is a team award.”Aispuro has served nearly 20 years with the department. “It is apparent that public safety is a top priority for all of these agencies, with the entire staff working together to go above and beyond what’s required by state law. Their staffs work very hard to collect comprehensive data on every sex offender in their jurisdictions so that the public has all of the information necessary to protect themselves,” said Mike Cormaci, president of OffenderWatch. This past December, Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) made seven arrests in connection with the “Operation Holiday Check” county-wide operation aimed at targeting sex offenders and predators in violation of their release conditions.Prior to the operation, WCSO used grant money from the U.S. Marshals Service to conduct significant pre-sweep research regarding 100 high-risk offenders. Officers researched and compiled data with OffenderWatch’s real-time records to compile motor vehicle archives for unreported vehicles, information from computer-aided dispatch calls for service related to associated addresses and names, potential phone numbers and properties aggregated from TLO software, and social media information from potential unreported phones and e-mail addresses.After compiling all relevant information into an OffenderWatch verification form, officers then presented it to the applicable offender to review and sign for confirmation. If an offender failed to report additional phone numbers, e-mails and other addresses that have been discovered, they have then officially violated the terms of their conviction.In December 2020, cell phone records were subpoenaed to track movements of suspected violating offenders and found some were leaving the county without making proper notifications to their local law enforcement agency. Thanks to OffenderWatch, officers were able to notate missing data in offender files so when the law enforcement team conducted their residence checks, missing data and photos of residences were instantly compiled and shared with partner agencies.Thanks to OffenderWatch’s comprehensive data management system, officers were able to uncover a number of violations that would have otherwise never been discovered.
